The long history of casinos and gambling

The latest stage in the development of casino gambling is the emergence of online casinos, which enable people to take part in all of the various types of games offered by these establishments, without having to leave their own homes. While many might believe that casinos are inventions of the last century – largely because of their associations with the development of Las Vegas – gambling houses go back much farther than that.

The actual act of gambling can be traced back to ancient cultures, when it was connected in the minds of people with psychic abilities and religious forces. At this stage it was not a recreational entertainment, but something taken far more seriously, being seen as a genuine prediction of a person’s future. It was only when such games of chance became divorced from religion that people began to enjoy them as pastimes. The very first casino is rumoured to have existed in China as early as 2000 BC, and the Venetians certainly had gambling venues during the 17th Century; however the earliest recognisable casinos, fitting the modern idea of the term, sprang up during the 19th Century. It was at this point that the actual name ‘casino’ became associated in the minds of the public with venues created specifically for the purposes of gambling.

Nowadays casinos are often located in luxury hotels, providing those who use them with a variety of other services and facilities besides simply gambling and, perhaps unsurprisingly, given the perennial popularity of gambling as a recreation, they eventually made the leap into the virtual world. Online casinos have become one of the success stories of the internet era, with the majority of them now providing the full range of cyber variants on games such as roulette, blackjack, poker and slot machines that are found in actual casinos.
